The Death of Dido

Oil on canvas (relined). 120 x 102 cm.

The attribution of this interesting painting has not yet been clarified. Numerous stylistic elements identify it as a work of Northern Mannerism, created around 1600, and it is probably the work of a Flemish painter who trained in Italy. The point of reference is Florentine painting in the style of Francesco Morandini, known as il Poppi, who is best known for his involvement in the decoration of the cabinet in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Attempts to attribute the artist to the circle of Rudolfine court artists have not yet yielded any results. A connection to the work of the Flemish artist Gillis Coignet (1542-1599), who was also active in Florence, is recognisable.
