The present work is a partial copy of the "Ill-Matched Couple" by Hendrick Terbrugghen (Private collection), with slight variations. It displays perhaps still closer parallels to a drawing tentatively attributed to Terbrugghen (Sotheby's, New York, 21.1.2004, lot 69) showing the same laughing woman. However, both prototypes lack the hand resting on an imaginary ledge featured in the present work.
