Justus van Egmont, attributed to

The Virgin and Child with an Angel

Oil on canvas (relined). 131 x 112 cm.

A refined Flemish Baroque depiction attributed to the Leiden-born Justus van Egmont, a later collaborator of Rubens. The Latin text on the base of the Virgin's throne explicitly alludes to the Passion of Christ, one of the the central iconographies of 17th century religious art ("Why, Mother, do you offer him flowers? Why, winged one, do you offer him grapes? One day he will wear a crown of thorns").
