The Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier (1506-1552) was one of the pioneers of the Christian mission in East Asia and co-founder of the Society of Jesus. He died on the island of Shangchuan Dao off the Chinese mainland in the Bay of Canton (today: Guangzhou). In 1554, he found his final resting place in Velha Goa (near Panjim, Goa, India) in the Basílica do Bom Jesus.
