Joseph Andreas Weiss

Eichstätt Cathedral Square with Fountain and Numerous Figures

Watercolour. 19 x 16.5 cm.

The cathedral square in Eichstätt with a view of the east choir with the chapter sacristy and the Roritz Chapel, to the right of which is the Willibaldsbrunnen fountain erected by Prince-Bishop Joh. Euchar Schenk von Castell in 1695. Weiss left behind a large number of small pencil drawings and watercolors, which caused great astonishment in his time due to their painterly subtlety, technical confidence and virtuosity. Weiss glorified the cities of Regensburg, Moscow and St. Petersburg in paintings for his various high patrons, including Emperor Nicholas of Russia and Queen Olga of Württemberg. In the last eight years of his career, Weiss was commissioned by King Ludwig II to paint a cityscape of one of Bavaria's eight districts.
