The portrait of Carl Ferdinand signed and dated lower left: Köttgen / 55.

These two paintings have only recently been identified as portraits of the painter Carl Ferdinand Sohn (1805-1867) and his wife. Gustav Adolf Köttgen, who painted the portraits in 1855, was working in Düsseldorf at the time, as was Sohn. You can find further information on these two paintings in the online catalogue.
