Zwischen 1960 und 1963 entstand eine kleine Serie von Arbeiten in Styropor, welche Manzoni auf unterschiedliche Weise mit Farbpigmenten oder strukturgebend mit Werkzeug bearbeitet hat. Bezüglich der Materialien experimentierte er mit leuchtenden phosphoreszierenden Farben und mit Kobaltchlorit, einer Farbe, die auf klimatische Verhältnisse veränderlich reagiert. Alle bekannten Arbeiten sind "Achrome" betitelt. 1960 äußerte Manzoni auf die Frage nach den Veränderungen und Chancen der Malerei: "As one cultural period became sterile in all its forms and thoughts (including painting), another one opened up (at the beginning of this century); not only was a new language born; all of our culture changed (and it isn't merely a matter of seeing things differently: one seems other things). Painting and painting problems (the last residues of post-Romanticism) do not belong to today's cycle of culture: they have been dead for some time (where they do survive, they survive only as bad 'literature'). Reshuffles, modifications are not enough: they still belong to the past; a new language and a total transformation can have nothing to do with the old language; an artist can only use materials, thoughts and forms of his own time."
