Stereo daguerreotype hand-tinted. Each image 6.2 x 4.7 cm visible mat opening (case size 10.7 x 12.8 x 2.3 cm). Mounted under a mat and together with stereo viewing device in original case with gilt embossed name of the studio. The stereo viewing device with embossed date of patent application. - The right image with slight oxidation at right edge, otherwise very good condition. Case and viewing device with slight traces of usage.

Kilburn had been active as a daguerreotypist in London since 1846. His studio belonged, besides that of Richard Beard's, to the most successful photographic institutions of the city. He was the first daguerreotypist to gain the title of “Photographer of the Royal Court”. After having won a medal for his hand-tinted portraits at the universal exhibition in 1851, he began to take stereo daguerreotypes. He applied for a patent for his foldable stereoscopic viewing device on 12 January 1853.
