Decorative Arts - Outstanding Offer

Furniture

Sparkling amongst the particularly interesting offer of historical furniture is a writing desk with polychrome painted decoration attributed to the Dresden lacquer artist Martin Schnell (lot 1764, € 60/80,000). The two-part piece is painted on three sides with the finest chinoiserie, which is in surprisingly good condition. It comes from a French collection and was once owned by Edmond James de Rothschild. A number of small boxes are from the famous Neuwied workshop of Abraham Roentgen (lot 1814, € 15/20,000), and a small cylinder bureau by David Roentgen, decorated with the finest, still coloured flower inlays has an estimate of € 70/80,000 (lot 1809). This section in the auction also includes several stamped French pieces of furniture from the Empire period from the workshop of the Jacob family and closes with the famous table lamp with nymph and nautilus by Gustav Gurschner from 1899 (lot 1854, € 25/30,000).

Porcelain

In this chapter, one of the most important German private collections of cobalt blue painted Meissen porcelains of the 18th century is offered, exhibited in Aachen and Münster in 2001 with an accompanying catalogue. The collectors are particularly proud of the rare pair of chestnut pots, the model by Michel Victor Acier from 1780 (lot 1586, € 2/3,000).

This auction will feature the house-painted porcelains from the collection of Dr Annedore Müller-Hofstede – the second collecting focus of the art historian who died in 2017 (the classicist porcelains will be auctioned in Berlin on 7 May). The most significant object is the much-publicised museum-quality cup and saucer – painted in camaieu by Ignaz Preissler with the most exquisite mythological scenes (lot 1543, € 8/10,000). The highest value porcelain from those of various properties is a magnificent, French fire-gilt bronze mounted group ‘Sultan and an African on an Elephant’ (lot 1692, € 45/55,000).

Jewellery and watches

Designed as a high-carat gift, the catalogue is richly filled and offers for the first time an additional chapter with high-quality wristwatches. The catalogue opens with historical jewellery, including a courtly diamond brooch with fine Burmese rubies (lot 19, € 15/20,000), an elegant Belle Epoque brooch with a 12-carat emerald cabochon (lot 18 € 10/20,000), a pearl collier de chien from the turn of the century (lot 38, € 9/12,000), and an impressive retro diamond brooch with a fine Columbian emerald which graces the cover (lot 58, € 15/20,000). Also worth noting is a multi-coloured gold tabatière in its original etui, presented to the Mannheim wine merchant Carl Möhl by King Ludwig I of Bavaria in recognition of his services to the royal wine store (lot 7, € 8/10,000).

The richly filled chapter of Artists’ Jewellery offers more works by the renowned goldsmiths Ilias Lalaounis and Sven Boltenstern from two private collections, which includes a diamond-set choker with an eight-carat natural Burmese ruby (lot 110, € 25/30,000). Wearable modern art takes the form of the ‘Thyria’ bird brooch by Georges Braque. The limited edition ‘Bijoux de Braque’ is based on his graphic series ‘Métarmorphoses’ and was created in 1960-1962 in collaboration with the Parisian sculptor Baron Heger de Loewenfeld (lot 107, € 5/7,000).

The contemporary jewellery also offers high-carat pieces such as a loose cushion-shaped old-cut diamond of 3.81 ct (€ 10/15,000), a brooch with an untreated Ceylon sapphire cabochon of around 41 ct (lot 132, € 25/30,000), and a bicolour pendant with an aquamarine of around 220 ct (lot 163, € 18/22,000).

The offer is crowned with a selection of 19 ladies and gentlemen’s watches by Cartier, Chopard, Chronoswiss, Longines, Franck Muller, Patek Philippe and Rolex. Highlights include a vintage Rolex GMT Master wristwatch, ref. 1675 ‘Long E’ with ‘Pepsi’ lunette from 1970 (lot 218, € 10/12,000), and a rare Cartier Tank à Vis with two dials from the exclusive ‘Collection Privée Cartier Paris’ (lot 226, € 5/7,000).

Silver

With over 200 lots, the usual extensive silver offer once again unites high-quality, partly museum-quality works from across five centuries.

Amongst the highlights are a Renaissance lidded tankard from Augsburg made in around 1590 by the Master Hans I Arnold, which should also be of interest to numismatists: In the centre of the lid is a sought-after bracteate from the Staufer period with the portraits of Emperor Barbarossa and Empress Beatrix with the lily sceptre (lot 1000, € 40/45,000). A gilt 36-piece Régence cutlery set in its original leather case, which Master Johann Engelbrecht had fitted with polychrome porcelain handles in the 1720s, bears witness to the close ties the Augsburg silversmith had with the Meissen porcelain manufactory (lot 1013, € 45/50,000). A large, lidded tankard with masterfully chased hunting scenes made by the Kronstadt goldsmith Bartholomäs Igell the Elder in around 1600-1620 originated in Siebenbürgen (lot 1003, € 30/35,000), whilst the imposing communion jug of the former Protestant church of St. Peter and Paul in Liegnitz was made by the Beslau Master Tobias Schier in around 1722 by order of a wealthy patron (lot 1014, €16/18,000).

The modern silver features interesting Art Deco designs such as a four-part Christofle service with the monogram of Princess Ileana of Romania (lot 1207, € 2,500/3,000). This is followed by coveted models of the Danish manufacturer Georg Jensen such as the sculptural coffee and tea service no. 1017, designed by Henning Koppel in 1952 (lot 1216, €10/12,000). Among the most recent examples is the unique coffee service ‘Orient’ made in 1992 by the Burg Giebichenstein gradate, Helmut Griese, offered for auction with the original design drawings (lot 1218, €3,200/3,600).

Bedeutende Mörser der Sammlung Schwarzach IV

On20 May, Lempertz Cologne will auction the fourth and last part of the Schwarzach mortar collection. The catalogue is more comprehensive than in previous years, not least because 27 objects from a second private collection in the Netherlands are also included. In addition to the large number of early medieval Islamic mortars, mostly archaeological finds of the 1980s in Afghanistan, further lots are worth noting such as the North German presentation mortar by Johann Otto Kröger from 1684 (lot 628, € 10/15,000).
