Werner Bischof - biography

After studying art history at the “Kunstgewerbeschule” in Zurich, Werner Bischof made a living as a self-employed advertising and fashion photographer as of 1936. In autumn 1945 he moved to South Germany and documented the desperate conditions in the aftermath of the Second World War on camera. In 1949, Bischof became a member of the photography agency "Magnum", and proceeded to work as a photojournalist in the Middle and Far East and in South America. He died in a tragic car crash in the Andes in 1954.
