Carl Moll

Following his resignation from the Secession – which he left in 1905, together with Gustav Klimt – he set forth his active commitment to the Vienna art scene as director of the avant-garde Galerie Miethke, which exhibited works by Gauguin, Van Gogh and Picasso, among others. Aside from Vienna, Moll presented his own art, e.g., in the Parisian Salon and at the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris, where he was awarded a silver medal. Moll’s style as a painter unites an Impressionist-pointillist manner with naturalistic elements and a strict articulation of the picture plane, which bears some resemblance to the decorative character of Secessionist art. In addition to his paintings of landscapes and interiors, he created polychrome lithographs and woodcuts that featured views of Vienna and of the Beethoven houses, among other motifs.
