Jasper van der Lanen was a Flemish landscape painter of the early 17th century who stood in the tradition of Gillis van Coninxloo. His landscapes do not show a clear separation of pictorial planes, as was common with the previous generation of landscape painters. Instead, they show a continuous pictorial space that links the fore-, middle-, and background. This feature brings with it the dissolution of the classical colour palette which traditionally divided the pictorial space using brown, green, and blue tones.
