Hendrick Heerschop was a genre painter from Haarlem who specialised in interiors featuring doctors, painters, alchemists and, as in this work, scholars. Like many other Dutch painters of the 17th century, Heerschop was considered to be a pupil of Rembrandt. However, it is now known that he trained under Willem Claesz Heda in Haarlem, where he is also mentioned as being a member of the Saint Lucas guild.
