A SOUTH GERMAN IVORY GROUP OF THE EDUCATION OF THE VIRGIN, FIRST HALF 17TH CENTURY

A South German ivory group of the Education of the Virgin, first half of 17th century, carved in full round, with a lesser formed reverse. The small sculpture designed as a silhouetted sculpture for a frontal viewpoint. The standing figure of Saint Ann with her head turned to the right. With her left hand she holds the shoulder of the Virgin standing in front of her and reading an open book. The group is of a high quality, with a rich play of drapery and expressive, well observed physiognomies.
With drill holes on the slightly browned reverse. Height 16,5 cm.
