Otto Beyer originated from Katowice and received his artistic education in Wroclaw, Kaliningrad and in Belgium. He participated in the 1910 exhibition of the Leipzig Secession and, after moving to Berlin, joined the Freie Secession in 1913. Following World War I, he became acquainted with Lovis Corinth and Max Pechstein, who both permanently influenced his work. In addition to painting, Beyer also created graphic art. Our depiction of a unit of combat medics resting in the evening was created in 1915: its particular effectiveness derives from the use of an expressive colouration.
