Hans Hartung
T 1955-23a
1955
Oil on canvas. 73 x 57 cm. Framed. Signed and dated 'Hartung 55'. - Minor traces of age.
"With Hartung, stroke and energy are equated to one another. From a larger art historical perspective, this energetic interpretation of line and stroke is part of each great process in the new painting, in which the 'handwriting' becomes the supreme criteria of the artistic, and where ultimately everything that is not pure, directly expressive handwriting, is rejected.[…] Hartung's pictures are not only expressionist eruptions. They are always 'pictures' in which order prevails as well as painterly quality. Hartung cultivates his painting as such, even where he only seems to scribble." (Werner Schmalenbach, in: Hans Hartung, exhib.cat. Kestner-Gesellschaft, Hanover et al., Hanover 1956, p.5f.)
