Johann Georg Platzer
A PAIR OF MERRY COMPANIES
Oil on copper. 18.5 x 30.5 cm each.
Johann Georg Platzer is one of the greatest representatives of the Viennese Rococo; the charm and frivolity of which is captured in his works, mostly on copper, with such joy and detail. His works, already in his lifetime, were in many court and later museum, for example, the Hermitage, Leningrad, the Metropolitan Museum and Wallace Collection, London. The works are rarely signed but due to their distinctive style are easily recognisable. Characteristic features of his works are the bright and shiny-silver colours and the precise drawing technique, for which he is often referred to as the “Austrian Goltzius”.
