MADONNA AND CHILD

Height 120 cm.

Limestone carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened, remains of former probably old polychromy. Designed for lower-viewpoint, the standing full-length figure of the Virgin holding the Christ Child, wearing only a loincloth, with her left hand against her side and above her hip, the Virgin holds the Child's foot with her right hand. Beneath the veil, her long wavy hair falls out from the crown and over her shoulders. The Virgin wears a plain floor-length belted garment. The rich material folds falling from under the right arm of the Virgin add particular volume to the sculpture. Head of the Child formerly broken and reattached. All but two of the crown rosettes lost. Toes of the Virgin and garment edge to the left partially lost. Damage with minor losses. Plinth end added.
