Oil on canvas. 140 x 105 cm.
J. Hartmann Darmstadt 1864.

Marie de Labensky, born 1832, was the daughter of the Russian ambassador in Darmstadt, Camille de Labensky, and lady in waiting to the Russian Tsaress and Hessian princess Maria Alexandrowna. In 1863 she married the Swedish politician Rudolf Mauritz von Klinckowström. This representative portrait was commissioned shortly after the wedding. Marie von Klinckowström died in 1907. The portrait painter Joseph Hartmann, likely formerly of Munich, painted a portrait of Marie von Hesse in 1840, and in 1848 he became court painter in Darmstadt where he painted a number of portraits of Hessian princes and other personalities.
