The "Stehende Kuh - Zinkkuh" (Cow Standing Up - Zinc Cow) was preceded by a single zinc cast in 1938 (cf. Schilling 150a). This, in turn, can be attributed to a standing terracotta cow which Mataré had smoothed down with agate and then painted ornamentally with engobes (cf. Schilling 150). The zinc exemplar, which had been lost during the war, was found again in Berlin in 1968 and was used for five posthumous bronze casts in 1975. The elementary reduction of forms and the geometricised, scratched decor are reminiscent of archaic depictions of animals.
