The relatively few paintings that Walter Ophey created during the First World War are, in the majority, portraits of friends and still lifes. The tiger lilies that give the painting its title extend far into the pictorial plane of the image with their elongated and bizarre forms. With the table top, somewhat folded into the plane and appearing to create an uncertain surface for the pitcher, and the expressive colours, the overall result is an expression of nervous dynamism, characteristic of the work of this period.
