Antonio Canal, called Canaletto, copy after

THE DOGE AT THE CELEBRATION OF THE "GIOVEDÍ GRASSO" AT THE PIAZZETTA

Oil on canvas (relined). 69 x 96 cm.

The painting depicts the lavish celebrations of the Venice carnival on the Piazzetta in front of the Doge´s Palace. In relation to this subject there exists a number of drawings by Canaletto and also a print by Giovanni Battista Brustolon from c. 1766; the existence of the original painting is however not known. Another version of the painting can be found in the London Wallace Collection, attributed to the studio of Canaletto.
