A NORTHERN FRENCH LIMESTONE FIGURE OF THE ENTHRONED NURSING VIRGIN CIRCA 1380/1390

Limestone, remains of polychromy, Northern France, c. 1380/1390 (GR 2.007)
The head and shoulders of the Madonna previously broken off and reattached. Wear with losses to the front of the plinth. 66 x 42 x 19 cm.

A Northern French limestone figure of the nursing Virgin, circa 1380/1390. The reverse flattened, minor remains of an older polychromy. The figure is designed for a frontal viewpoint slightly beneath the level of the sculpture. The Virgin sits in a large throne with armrests, the back of which is decorated by two rows of tracery. Her crowned head is tilted towards her Son, who holds an apple in his hand as he nurses at her breast. The Virgin is clothed in a long pleated gown and a cloak around her shoulders which is pulled over her knee and falls in a finely observed contrasting composition of deep elliptical and vertical folds.
