Two small ivory reliefs, Northern France, late 14th C.
Fine vertical cracks. The relief is set into a wooden, velvet covered frame. Each 7.8 x 5.1 cm.

A late 14th century Northern French ivory diptych showing the Crucifixion and the Virgin, with slight remains of a former polychromy. The two corresponding ivory reliefs were originally joined by two hinges. Both scenes are depicted in low relief beneath three Gothic arches, one half shows the Virgin and Child accompanied by Saint Catherine with the wheel and Saint Margaret emerging from the defeated dragon holding a cross. The opposite side shows Christ Crucified and accompanied by the mourning Virgin and Saint John.
