A TUSCAN WOOD CORPUS CHRISTI, CIRCA 1400

Wood, orig. polychromy, arms attached, Toscana, c. 1400 (GR 2.019)
Losses to the polychromy, the fingers and arm joints are added, the arms only loosely attached. Height 133 m, width of arms 91 cm.

A Tuscan wood Corpus Christi, circa 1400. Probably poplar, carved in the round, only the shoulders flattened. Cleaned to reveal the original polychromy. Christ crucified with three nails, the arms pulled wide apart and the feet lain over each other. The naked, elongated body is clothed only in a perizonium with coloured vertical stripes, which is knotted together at the hip and falls laterally in a cascade of drapery. The high quality of the carving can be seen in the expressive physiognomy and the modelling of the body.

Provenance

Purchased in Galleria Dell´Angelo, Lugano (1978).
