A LATE 14TH CENTURY BURGUNDIAN LIMESTONE FIGURE OF A BISHOP SAINT

Limestone, remains of polychromy, Burgundy, late 14th C. (GR 2.009)
The hook of the crozier lost. Worn. Height 106 cm.

A late 14th century Burgundian limestone figure of a Bishop-Saint. Worked in the round, minor remains of an older polychromy. A standing, full-figure depiction of a saint dressed in full episcopal garb with a mitre, and a crozier held in his left hand. The upraised right hand, which previously held his attribute is lost. The piece has been carved in detail in the round, so that even the lappets of his mitre and his maniple are visible from the reverse. The bishop's stole and robes are also depicted in detail, and fall in deep folds to the front of his body.
