A PAIR OF LATE 17TH CENTURY WESTPHALIAN OAK FIGURES OF THE EVANGELISTS LUKE AND JOHN

Pair of sculptures, wood, older polychromy, worn, Westphalia, late 17th C.
Part of Saint John's quill lost, some wear and small losses to the polychromy. Height each 41 cm.

A pair of late 17th century Westphalian oak figures of the Evangelists Luke and John. The reverse of the attributes flattened, the older polychromy has been reworked in places. Two full-figure depictions of Luke and the young Saint John holding books in their hands and accompanied by the attributes of bull and eagle, by which they can be recognised. According to tradition, the sculptures originate from South-East Westphalia, and the composition is reminiscent of the Sasse workshop in Attendorn.
