A BOXWOOD FIGURE OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

Boxwood, attributed to Nicolas van der Veken (GR 2.122)
The staff is an addition. Fine crack to the plinth and thumb. Height 29 cm.

A boxwood figure of Saint John the Baptist. Carved in the round. A full-figure depiction of the Saint standing on an earth base with a lamb at his feet, clothed in a hair shirt and a cloak draped around his body. The style of the figure, which can be dated to the late 17th century, allows for an attribution to the carver Nikolas van der Veken, who, following his apprenticeship under Maximilian Labbé, was active in the workshop of Lucas Faydherbe in Mechelen from 1647 onwards and master in the Guild of Saint Luke there from 1662.

Provenance

Purchased from Julius Böhler, Munich, 1972.
