Leonhard Falter

A PAIR OF WESTPHALIAN CARVED WOODEN ANGELS, CIRCA 1770/1780

Pair of sculptures, wood, older polychromy, Westphalia: Leonhard Falter c. 1770/1780
Only minor wear. Height each 42 cm.

A pair of Westphalian carved wooden angels, by leonhard Falter, circa 1770/1780. The reverse partially flattened and hollowed out, an older and presumably partially original polychromy. The unique composition of these angels, which are dated to circa 1770/1780 and of whom one holds the Decalogue, is highly reminiscent of the works of the carver Leonhard Falter, who was active in South-East Westphalia and produced sculptures for the Benedictine Abbey of Grafschaft in Sauerland. In fact, according to tradition the sculptures were thought to be the work of Benedictine monks from Sauerland.

Provenance

Private collection, Westphalia.
