August Neven du Mont was born in Cologne in 1866 and studied at the Academy in Düsseldorf shortly before moving to England. His decision to take up an artistic career and move to the country whose art and culture he loved meant giving up his claim to editing a newspaper in Cologne which he would have inherited from his father. This elegant portrait of a lady can be dated to the last decade of du Monts artistic life, and was part of his estate upon his early death in 1909.
