Jacob van Huysum

Flower Still Life

Oil on canvas (relined). 66 x 89 cm.
Signed lower centre: Jacobus van Huysum.

Both his father Justus van Huysum (1659-1716) and his brother Jan (1682-1749) were important painters of floral still lifes in Amsterdam. Jacob van Huysum moved to England in 1721, where among other work he also carried out significant commissions for Houghton Hall, the residence of Prime Minister Robert Walpole. Among his most renowned works were the botanical illustrations for John Martyns "Historia Plantarum Rariorum" (1728/38) and the extensive "Catalogus Plantarum" (1730).
We would like to thank Fred Meijer for confirming this piece as a work by Jacob van Huysum.
