Marcantonio Aquilio, attributed to

The Adoration of the Child

Oil on panel. 61 x 44.5 cm (unframed).

Marcantonio Aquilio was the eldest son and an employee of Antoniazzo Romano, who led the largest workshop in Rome and the surrounding area from 1462 to around 1512 and carried out numerous commissions for frescoes and paintings in and around this city. This arched panel in a presumably 19th century renaissance style frame shows the adoration of the Child before the stable, above which hover three rejoicing angels. The annunciation to the shepherds can be seen in the landscape background. We would like to thank Professor Gaudenz Freuler (Zurich) for confirming the attribution to Marcantonio Aquilio from a photograph.
