Gillis Claesz de Hondecoeter

Roman Landscape with Ruins and a Carneval Procession

Oil on canvas. 98 x 117 cm.

The present work is closely linked to an "Adoration of the Magi" kept in the Graf Schönborn collection in Pommersfelden which was first attributed to Frederik van Valckenborch by G. T. Faggin (cf. Giorgio T. Faggin: De Gebroeders Frederick en Gillis van Valckenborch, in: Bulletin van het Museum Boymans-van Beuningen XIV, 1963, Lieferung 1, p. 8, illus. 7). However, Faggin later ammended this attribution to Gillis van Valckenborch.
Alexander Wied, Vienna, will include both the piece in Pommersfelden and the closely related present work in his forthcoming catalogue raissoné of Gillis van Valckenborch's works.
