Salomon van Ruysdael

Windmill by the Bank of a River

Oil on panel. 29 x 38 cm (oval).
Signed and dated lower center: S. V. Ruyesdael 1629.

With the remains of numerous red varnish seals to the reverse of the panel.
The present depiction of a Dutch landscape is an early work of the renowned Haarlem landscape painter Salomon van Ruysdael. In his monograph on the artist, Wolfgang Stechow mentions that the development of this artist's signature can be examined far more accurately than is the case for many of his contemporaries (cf. Stechow I.c., p. 49). The phase from 1628 to 1631 was the only time in which the artist signed his surname with an extra "e" in the middle, as is the case in this painting which is dated 1629.
We would like to thank Mrs Ellis Dullart of the RKD (The Hague) for confirming the authenticity of this work.
