Central Rhine Region circa 1470

A Central Rhenish figure of the Virgin and Child, circa 1470

Wood, carved in the round, minor remains of former polychromy. A half-length depiction of the Virgin Mary holding the Child before her and floating above a cloud bank. The entire sculpture is worked in exquisite detail, especially the strands of hair falling across the Virgin's back, which are particularly finely worked. This piece is comparable in style to the next sculpture "The Virgin and Child on the Crescent Moon" (lot 1287).
Some wear with minor losses. Height 35 cm.
