A Flemish figure of the Virgin and Child, circa 1470/1480

Wood, carved three-quarters in the round and flattened to the reverse, with extensive remains of former polychromy. The crowned Virgin stands in contrapposto holding the naked Child in both hands. She wears a blue dress with gilt hems, this is, however, almost entirely obscured by a cloak worn over the Virgin's shoulders, which falls to the ground in a rich play of drapery and largely dominates the sculpture's composition.
With insect damage and minor wear. Height 38 cm.
