Lower Rhine Region circa 1480/1490

A Lower Rhenish figure of Pope Gregory, circa 1480/1490

Oak, carved in the round. Minor remains of former polychromy. A standing full-length depiction of the saint dressed in papal attire and holding an open book in his left hand. The sculpture displays great attention to detail in the depiction of the costume, in which the drapery of the cloak, held pressed against the saint's chest, exhibits a unique sculptural quality. The style of the piece links it to the circle or early successors of Arnt von Zwolle, who was active in Kalkar and Zwolle.
The right hand lost. Fine vertical cracks. Replacements to the drapery beneath the left hand and to the front edge of the plinth. Height 90 cm.
