Arent van Bolten, attributed to

An oil lamp in the form of a grotesque chimera, attributed to Arent van Bolten

Bronze, cast in the round, patinated. Due to his stay in Italy from 1596 to 1602, the works of the Dutch artist Arent van Bolten are heavily influenced by Mannerism. Two further examples of his grotesques are kept in Amsterdam in the Rijksmuseum, and in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge under the inv. nr. M.8-1997. The present cast was probably made in the 18th century.
Mounted to a marble plinth. Height 18.5 cm (without plinth).
