View of Taormina with Mount Etna

The view of the amphitheatre near Taormina was one of the classic motifs painted by 19th century artists visiting Sicily. This section with Mount Etna in the background was the most frequently chosen viewpoint, for example in an oil study presumably made in 1835 by Carl Morgenstern (Lempertz auction 987, Cologne, 19.11.2011, lot 1431). A handwritten note on this painting's stretcher - possibly meant as a comparison - mentions Carl Morgenstern, but according to Christoph Andreas in Frankfurt, the present piece cannot be attributed to this artist, but rather to an unknown German/Italian painter working in around 1840/1850.
