This scene of a forest clearing with a flowering meadow and lively little stream is depicted in the tightly cropped manner typical of the Dresden artist Christian Friedrich Gille. His small and seemingly unspectacular nature studies reveal the brilliance of a painter appropriately known as the "German Corot", as like the French artist, Gille was an expert in transforming apparently mundane motifs into refined compositions. However, this skill was rarely understood or appreciated by his contemporaries, and his talent was only truly recognised after his death.
