Otto Lange
Stilleben auf roter Decke
1916
Colour woodcut on Japan paper 76.5 x 55.3 cm Framed under glass. Signed 'Otto Lange' lower right and inscribed 'Holzschnitt Handdruck' lower left. - In very good condition with fresh colours. The margins slightly irregularly cut. With an unobtrusive linear rubbing to lower left corner.
From 1915 to 1920 Otto Lange served as a lecturer at the Königlich Preussische Kunstgewerbeschule (Royal Prussian School of Decorative Arts) in Bromberg. A large part of his graphic oeuvre was created at this time - with a primary focus on colour woodcuts. A monotype application of colour to the printing block with water-soluble instead of oil-based paints is characteristic of Lange's approach. For this reason, the work makes a very vividly modulated impression and looks as though it had been coloured by hand.
