Bernhard Peters

Winter Landscape with a City View

Oil on canvas. 68.5 x 95.5 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: B. Peters 1859 (partially overpainted).

The landscape painter Bernhard Peters from Mecklenburg participated in exhibitions at the Berlin Academy from 1839 to 1848. He was a pupil of the landscape painter Otto Völckel, who was a professor at the academy. Peters later taught Otto Lilienthal, the later pioneer of aviation who was also born in Anklam. Bernhard Peter's works are rarely found on the market. The present piece shows a winter landscape in the evening light with the view of a city and a frozen river. The motif was presumably taken from the artist's home of Mecklenburg, but he also painted Alpine scenes and views of Scotland.
