Eugène Dücker succeeded Oswald Achenbach as professor at the Academy in Düsseldorf in 1872. Many of his pupils went on to become famous painters, including Max Clarenbach, and he had considerable influence on the landscape painting of the Düsseldorf school in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Dücker's works usually show gentle and idyllic landscapes, primarily coastal and marine scenes in which he conveys the moods and light conditions of various times of day in subdued but finely nuanced colours.
