Benjamin Gerritsz Cuyp

A Peasant Brawl

Oil on panel (parquetted).

The pale background and closed interior of this piece accentuate the dramatic scene of peasants fighting in the foreground. The method of composition, subdued palette and quick, liberal brushwork are characteristic of Cuyp's work. Similar pieces can be found in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne - Fondation Corboud (inv. no. Dep. 511) and in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg (inv. no. Gm 397).
The idea that scenes from the lives of peasants could be worthy of pictorial representation was one of the greatest innovations of Netherlandish painting in the 16th and 17th centuries, and motifs of this kind make up the majority of Benjamin Gerritsz Cuyp's extensive oeuvre.
This painting is registered with the RKD in The Hague under the no. BD/0560 - ONS/Genre 2: Low Life (afb.nr. 0000077623).
