Simon Verelst

A Floral Still Life

Oil on canvas (relined). 85 x 67 cm.
Signed lower right: S. Verelst f.

Simon Verelst continued the tradition of the Dutch floral still life into the second half of the 17th century, and his sojourns to London and Paris contributed to the spread of the genre throughout Europe. He was son and pupil to the painter Pieter Verelst, who himself was a pupil of Gerrit Dou and founder of the Confrerie Pictura in The Hague, where his son was also taught. Alongside his elegantly composed and coloured floral still lifes, Verelst also painted portraits influenced by the great success of those of Antonis van Dyck in England.
