This work depicts one of the many cloisters in Halberstadt Cathedral. It was created in 1848 during the artist's later period. The cathedral was one of his favourite subjects, and he painted it many times throughout his career - rarely in a realistic manner but more as a dramatically composed motif. In order to create more impressive effects, he often contrasted bright rays of sunlight or blankets of snow with shady arches, rib vaulting and scattered rubble. The effect being more evocative of medieval architecture than it was illustrative.
