A lacquered wood miniature netsuke of a sleeping young monk by a mokugyo, by Kyûsai. Dated 1919

Seated by a large mokugyo, his left hand placed on his knee. Details in red and green lacquer. Signed Kyûsai. With original kiri-box, inscribed on the lid “netsuke akebono (daybreak)” and on the reverse “Taishô hachi tsuchinoto-mi (1919) shinharu Tetsugendô Kyûsai” and seal Tetsu.
Height 1.8 cm; length 2.9 cm

Hirai Shin (1879-1938) with artist names Tetsugendô (until 1914), Kyûsai (as written here until 1927) and Ikkyû, lived in Osaka. He was proficient in many techniques including lacquering and carved several „micro-netsuke“.
