A cast iron bust of Ernst Ludwig Heim.

A portrait of the famous Berlin doctor in Classical costume. H 27.8 cm.
Royal Prussian Iron Foundries, 2nd half 19th C., probably after the bust by Ludwig Wichmann.

Ernst Ludwig Heim (1747 - 1834) first worked as town doctor of Spandau, but was later named privy councillor and moved to Berlin in 1783. His practice was located in Markgrafenstrasse, and here he treated thousands of patients per year regardless of their social standing. His commitment to his work - exemplified for example by his introduction of smallpox vaccination to Berlin - together with his wit made him popular at court. It was Frederick William III's expressed wish that he treat the ailing Queen Louise during her last 10 days on earth, and Heim was present at her death on 19th July 1810.
