The present work is one of the later paintings of Adolf Schmidt, an artist whose exact date of death is unknown. It is known that he was born in Berlin and studied at the Academy in Düsseldorf before returning to Berlin in the 1830s and again to Düsseldorf later in his life. It was here that this painting was made, as we are able to ascertain from the abbreviation “Df.” next to the signature. The work was featured in the exhibition of the Dresden Academy in 1865.
