An inlaid walnut globe table.

A table formed as a globe with palisander, bone and coloured wood inlays on a tripod base. The upper hemisphere can be lifted to reveal four small drawers surrounding a central mirror. The lower semispherical leaf can be removed to reveal compartments and secret compartments. H 98, diameter of globe 41.4 cm.

Globe tables represent one of the highlights of Viennese Biedermeier cabinetmaking. Designing such pieces was part of the cabinetmaker's draughtsmanship training, and thus many more designs for these pieces exist than actual furniture, as they are extremely difficult to construct. This particularly fine example stands out through the use of various contrasting inlays.
